LIZ HERMOSILLO

manifesto

I am a ceramicist based in Mexico City. My practice aims to create everyday ceramic objects that have the capability to form an intimate relationship with people. I aspire to create close, honest pieces that offer a sense of well-being through their use.

I am present at every stage of the process; I research, formulate, prepare, and shape each piece through an ongoing exploration that spans from clays and glazes to the transformations that occur during firing. Over the years, I have cultivated a mindful practice rooted in the search for functional materials and finishes, and in the study of sustainability. Approaches that become evident in both the aesthetics and the spirit of each object.

The wheel is my primary tool; I chose it for its rhythmic repetition, immediacy, and openness to imperfection. I am drawn to revealing the essence of the clay, leaving areas exposed that invite touch and engage the eye. I select my glaze palette for its ability to tell the story of the process, like the line that appears at the center of plates, the reaction of natural oxides present in the clay, or the unpredictable marks left by fire on the surface.
